Micronized Creatine: What Grinding the Powder Changes, and the Two Trials Behind the Claims

Micronisation shrinks the particles of the same molecule so they disperse and dissolve faster. It does not change how much creatine water can hold. The two human trials that make claims for it were run by the companies selling it.

In the US government's supplement label database, 47 of 431 on-market products named for creatine put "micronized" in the product name itself, and searches for micronized creatine monohydrate run to roughly 29,000 a month. The word describes a manufacturing step, not a new compound: the particles are smaller, the molecule is the same. What that changes is how fast the powder goes into water. What it does not change is how much water it needs, or — on any independent evidence — what reaches muscle. This is research journalism and contains no usage guidance, per our editorial standards.

What micronisation physically does

A 2026 review of fast-dissolving creatine technologies at Sechenov University describes micronisation as reducing particle size "to the micron (1–10 μm) or nanometer (<100 nm) range", which raises the dissolution rate and the apparent solubility through increased surface area (Albagachiev et al., Pharmaceuticals 2026;19(1):128, PMID 41599726). The same review gives creatine monohydrate's solubility as 13 g/L at 25 °C, and it is candid about the drawbacks: micronised powders "remain physically unstable", and it lists sediment formation upon dissolution among the problems later processing steps try to fix.

The distinction between rate and capacity is the whole story. Smaller particles reach the answer faster; they do not change where equilibrium sits. At 13 g/L, the arithmetic is fixed:

A glass of 250 mL holds about 3.25 g at room temperature. Stir 5 g into it and some of the powder is still solid, micronised or not — it is simply finer solid.

Does being dissolved matter?

For the plasma curve, somewhat. In a 2002 study at University College Chichester, 2.3 g of creatine monohydrate swallowed as a lozenge or as a crystalline suspension in ice-cold water gave a 20% lower peak plasma concentration and a 30–35% smaller area under the curve than the same dose taken in solution. Both solid forms still raised plasma creatine five- to six-fold (Harris et al., J Sports Sci 2002;20(2):147–51, PMID 11811571).

That is the strongest evidence that dissolution state affects absorption kinetics. It is also where the evidence stops. The study did not measure muscle creatine, which is what supplementation is meant to raise, and it compared fully dissolved creatine with undissolved crystals — not micronised with regular powder.

A 2018 rat study adds a complication in the other direction: absolute oral bioavailability of creatine monohydrate was 53% at a low dose and 16% at a high dose, so absorption is saturable (Alraddadi et al., Pharmaceutics 2018;10(1):31, PMID 29518030). Two of its authors declare they are inventors on creatine hydrochloride patents, and the paper uses its model to predict an advantage for that salt. The human relevance of the rat figures is not established.

Counting the trials

A PubMed search for micronized creatine[tiab] OR micronised creatine[tiab] on 2026-09-17 returns 14 records. Read one by one:

No independent trial compares micronised with non-micronised creatine monohydrate on muscle creatine, strength or body composition. Systematic reviews of "alternative forms" do not list it at all: a 2022 review in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research found trials on magnesium chelate, citrate, malate, ethyl ester, nitrate and pyruvate — salts and derivatives, not particle sizes (Fazio, Elder & Harris 2022, PMID 36000773).

The two company trials

KleanCREATINE, 2026. Published in Cureus, funded by the supplier Lasons India, first author employed there. Its pharmacokinetic phase was open-label, with five men in each sequence, each drinking 3 g of product in 240 mL of water, against "a marketed creatine monohydrate" that the paper does not name. It reports a peak of 8.10 against 4.80 and relative bioavailability of 160–175%, with concentrations given in units printed as "nmol/Ul" (Aggarwal & Agarwal, Cureus 2026;18(2):e103091, PMID 41809290). An eight-week, 52-man phase followed. The abstract describes its comparison as standard creatine monohydrate; the results text describes a placebo group. A reader cannot tell from the paper which it was.

One detail in the method is worth noticing: 3 g in 240 mL is 12.5 g/L, just under the 13 g/L solubility limit. A non-micronised powder at that concentration can dissolve fully given enough stirring, so the pharmacokinetic comparison may depend on how long each drink stood, which the paper does not report.

CreAMP, 2025. Also in Cureus, every one of nine authors at Bright Lifecare, the company behind the product. A double-blind crossover in 32 men tested a new formulation — 3 g creatine monohydrate plus 0.1 g of a patented additive — against Bright Lifecare's own "Regular Micronized Creatine Monohydrate" as the reference (Trehan et al., Cureus 2025;17(4):e81555, PMID 40182172). It reports 38.97% higher bioavailability for the new product.

Read together, the two company trials point in opposite directions about what "micronised" is. One markets micronisation as the upgrade. The other treats micronised creatine as the regular baseline to be beaten.

What can honestly be said

  • Micronised creatine is creatine monohydrate with smaller particles; no review of alternative forms treats it as a separate compound.
  • It dissolves faster, not further. About 385 mL of room-temperature water is needed to dissolve 5 g fully, by our arithmetic from the 13 g/L solubility figure.
  • Dissolved creatine gives a higher plasma peak than undissolved crystals in one 2002 study, and both forms still raised plasma creatine five- to six-fold.
  • No independent trial compares micronised against non-micronised monohydrate on muscle creatine, strength or body composition.
  • The only human claims of superior bioavailability come from a supplier-funded study with five men per sequence, an unnamed comparator and a comparison group described two different ways.

Frequently asked questions

What is micronized creatine?

It is creatine monohydrate milled or processed into much smaller particles, typically a few micrometres across. The molecule is identical to ordinary creatine monohydrate. The smaller particles have more surface area, so the powder disperses and dissolves in water faster.

Is micronized creatine better absorbed than regular creatine?

No independent trial has shown that. The only human study reporting higher bioavailability for a micronised brand was funded by that brand's supplier and compared it with an unnamed marketed monohydrate in five men per sequence. A 2002 study did find that undissolved creatine gave a lower plasma peak than dissolved creatine, so dissolving matters to the plasma curve, but no study links particle size to muscle creatine or performance.

Does micronized creatine dissolve completely?

It dissolves faster, but the ceiling is the same. Creatine monohydrate's solubility is about 13 g per litre at 25 °C, so 5 g needs roughly 385 mL of water to dissolve fully at room temperature, and cold water holds less. Below that volume some powder stays undissolved whatever the particle size. The 2026 review also notes micronised powders can leave sediment.

Is micronized creatine the same as creatine monohydrate?

Yes, chemically. Systematic reviews of alternative creatine forms list salts and esters such as creatine citrate, malate, ethyl ester, nitrate and pyruvate. Micronised creatine is not among them, because it is the same compound in a different physical form.

Does micronized creatine cause less bloating?

Why do studies use micronized creatine if it is no different?

Because it is what is commonly sold. Two independent trials, a 2014 microvascular study and a 2019 study in vegans, simply used commercially available micronised creatine monohydrate as their study material, without testing it against another form.
